Our History

The following is a brief history on the rise of St Matthias. See how our church came together through the fellowship of community churches and the love of parishioners.

April 1973 -  Robert and Roberta Hundley held a meeting to discuss forming an Episcopal Church in Devine, Texas.

February 1974 - 3.5 acres was purchased for us by the Diocese of West Texas.

March 1974 - An Army barracks was purchased from Fort Sam and converted.

St. George Episcopal Church, San Antonio donated the Parish Hall.

St. John’s Episcopal Church of New Braunfels donated the pews.

First United Methodist Church, Devine donated red velvet cushions for our pews.

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Eldorado donated the round stained glass windows.

The large stained-glass window with the cross and Texas wildflowers was given as a memorial to remember Robert Hundley.

James Mitchell and staff built the altar.

The bell in front of the church was given to St. Matthias by Jack and Kay Hall.

Rhonda and Malcolm Brown built the large cross in front of the church and the metal arbor over the walkway.

June 15, 1974 - we held our first service

St Matthias is blessed to have such wonderful ministers serve us over the years:

Reverend Ben Orozco, Reverend Frank Ambuhl, Reverend Robert Carabin, Reverend Mary and Reverend Doug Earl, Reverend Phil Taylor, Reverend Bill Fasel, Reverend Ann Holland, Reverend Al Leverage, Reverend Ben Wright, Reverend Dick Ames, Reverend Robert Plested, Reverend Russell Sherman, Reverend Wayne Bowers and Reverend Eric Fenton.

In June 2020, The Reverend Dexter Lesieur was ordained into the Diaconate as a transitional Deacon and is the Deacon in Charge at St. Matthias’.

December 16, 2020, Father Dexter Lesieur was ordained into the Priesthood and is now serving as the Vicar of St. Matthias.

St Matthias was built from the community and continues to serve the community through our many ministries. We would love to have you be part of our fellowship.
